Dhanur Ramana: Engineering Fear Through Cinema
Welcome Dhanur, we are very excited to have you today with us to discuss about your work.
Who is Dhanur Ramana and how did the passion for creating begin?
I am a filmmaker and director who transitioned into the creative arts following a long, disciplined career in IT project leadership and public service. My journey is defined by a shift from the structured logic of engineering to the evocative world of visual storytelling.
My passion for creating began with a deep-seated desire to explore the human condition through a lens of authenticity and discipline. While my professional roots provided me with the technical rigor to manage complex projects, I found my true calling in the ability to translate silence, emotion, and cultural pulse into cinematic experiences.
Can you tell us a bit about your previous work?
If you are referring to my IT journey, it was an amazing. Looking back, it's over 28yrs of experience playing various roles. To be frank, IT wasn't my choice. I had a classmate in my school days. He wanted to be a graphic designer(IT), but due to his sickness he died at the age of 18. That was devastating for me. After few weeks, I told myself that I would do one thing for him, that's dedicate my career into IT for him. I believe somehow he helped me throughout this journey. Now I am pursuing my dreams. And I believe he will give me his full blessing.
Your journey from IT leadership to filmmaking is extraordinary—but it was also born from an intense personal battle. How did that pivotal moment reshape not just your life, but your artistic voice?
Film has always been my passion since the age of 7 when I watched an Indian movie acted by one of the renowned late Indian actor, Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan. He played 9 amazing roles in that one movie called "Navarathri". I was frazzled. My big idol is Denzel Washington who never failed to spark the light in me about acting. Every time I watch him on the big screen, I wonder what was running in his mind when he plays a role, the authority he shoulders on the character as no one could do better. His charisma for any given film tells who he is. He galvanised my mind constantly. These are the reasons got me where I am today. I have tributed my film to both these fabulous actors in the opening of the movie.
This drive led me to formalize my craft through the Diploma in Assistant director programme that I took from Singapore Media Academy and, eventually to the international stage, where my debut work garnered recognition at the World Film Festival Cannes. Till date, I have won 9 awards from various film festival awards and still counting.
For me, creation isn't just about the final frame; it’s about the meticulous process of building a narrative that resonates globally while staying true to my personal values of integrity and constant evolution. Whether it is a short experimental film or a feature-length project, I am fueled by the challenge of turning a vision into a shared reality.
My IT experience as said earlier, has helped me to extend my capacity to craft better in making a film. And I am learning to better my best.
CONVERSATION ABOUT: ‘‘Court Jester - Revive’’
The “Court Jester” is both theatrical and terrifying. What does this character symbolize beyond the surface of violence?
I specialize in subverting expectations. During the 2008/2009 Singapore Halloween season, I pioneered a 'Horror Jester' that became a major audience favorite by flipping the character on the traditionally harmless entertainer. After overcoming significant personal and medical hurdles, I’ve channeled that resilience into a new script that revives the character with a focus on psychological tension and 'subtle violence.' The Jester is no longer a joke; he is a judge. He targets the white lies we take for granted, acting as a personification of the subconscious mind punishing the conscience.
You created this film after losing your ability to speak. How did silence influence your visual storytelling choices?
That is a fantastic question. Honestly, it forced me to stop talking and start truly observing. I became hyper-sensitive to the smallest details—the way a shadow falls or the rhythm of a person's gait.
I began to look at the world through a lens of "Moonwalk" intuition. Much like Michael Jackson didn't just dance but commanded every micro-movement and beat with clinical precision and soulful grace, I learned to see beyond the surface. I realized that true magic happens in the quiet moments of study.
I would just sit, silent and still, absorbing the energy of a room or a situation. I started to understand the heartbeat of life and how I could translate that raw emotion into frame after frame. For me, filmmaking isn't just recording reality; it’s about taking those observed truths and innovating them into a cinematic experience that feels as rhythmic and iconic as a classic performance.
Do you believe silence can sometimes communicate more powerfully than dialogue? How is that reflected in this project?
Religiously. In my view, silence is essential to mastering the craft of innovation. This project prioritizes visual locution over dialogue, using the actors' expressions to carry the narrative weight. It creates a unique tension that really needs to be experienced on screen to be fully understood.
“Court Jester – Revive” leans into experimental storytelling. What freedoms—and challenges—did that give you as a filmmaker?
The script for Court Jester - Revive was born in early 2024, at a time when my doctors were looking at a Stage 4 diagnosis and questioning how much time I had left. I made a silent pact with myself: I would not only survive the surgery, but I would bring this vision to life. By July, I was recovering from a major operation, fine-tuning a story that had become my lifeline.
When it finally came time to shoot in October 2025, I pushed the limits even further, demanding we wrap the entire production in a single, grueling 14-hour day. I was operating on a liquid diet and sheer willpower, refusing any special treatment. I told my crew that if the Court Jester had the capacity to perform, so did I. Every single-camera shot we captured that day was a testament to a team that believed in me, and a personal defiance against the odds.
In future projects, do you plan to explore similar genre intersections, or are there other genres you're eager to explore ?
While my current work has a specific focus, I’m actively expanding my slate into the romance, sports, and action genres. I specialize in narratives defined by sharp pivots and unconventional pacing—stories that keep an audience guessing. Right now, I’m in the deep development phase of these concepts, refining the story beats to ensure the final scripts are as high-impact as possible.
If you could sum up the film’s core question in a single sentence that would make someone want to watch it immediately, what would it be?
Life begins at the edge of death. Experience the groundbreaking fusion of theatre and film in a cinematic event unlike anything you've seen before.
